What I’m Allergic To (Short Version)

I can’t possibly list all the foods and spices and flavorings I react to, but believe me when I say there are few recipes or restaurant meals I don’t have to modify. Add celiac disease and eosinophilic esophagitis (allergic esophagus) to the mix, and you get one girl who struggles to find something to eat. Unfortunately, my weight doesn’t represent how little I can eat!

Below is the short list. If you want to read the story of my diagnosis, go to PeanutAllergy.com:  Diagnosed with Multiple Food Allergies as an Adult: Amy’s Story.

In addition to gluten because I have celiac disease, I react the most to:

  • asparagus
  • capers
  • cashews
  • corn (I can tolerate small amounts)
  • dairy
  • guar flour
  • kefir
  • nutmeg
  • pineapple
  • rennet
  • soy
  • vanilla
  • yeast

Love hearing about someone else with not just the typical nuts allergies. I totally understand what you are going through! I am anaphylactic to cashews, pineapples, coconuts and strawberries. Every day is a challenge of getting people to believe the severity of my not so common allergens! Lovely blog!!

I have a laundry list of food allergies as well. I have been fortunate in that some of my treatments have finally allowed food back into my diet.

I just found you and can’t wait to read al your blog entries! I’m allergic/sensitive to gluten, corn, dairy, soy, peanuts, and ginger. Add in a LOT of skin contact allergies (elastic….who is allergic to elastic??). My current challenge is finding corn free medications.

    • I’m glad you found my blog, too! Wow, we have a lot of similar allergies. Here’s a helpful link for corn in meds and the website is great, too.

I am struggling with a lot of skin issues, too –this is a new development. So hard to figure out what is causing it. I write this as I scratch–LOL!

I don’t have eosinophilic esophagitis, but my diet is similar. I tested positive for intolerances to gluten, dairy, egg, soy, corn, oats, teff, and hemp. At least I’m not allergic to nuts.

  8. Nice to meet you @asucculentblog and I just found you on twitter, too! We do have a lot in common. I’ve noticed I’m starting to react a little to peanuts and cashews. Drats. A lot of us with soy allergies have trouble with peanuts, so I’m not all that surprised. Thanks for getting in touch and I look forward to connecting with you more.

    • I use Earth Balance Soy-free Buttery Spread. It does have a tiny bit of corn, but I don’t seem to react. I don’t see corn on your list. Oh wait it has sunflower lecithin. Damn! Sorry.
I found a new mayo at Costco called “Just Mayo” that I don’t think has any of your allergens. For corn-allergic folks, the food starch is derived from corn, but again has a teensy bit according to the company. I plan to research more.
Have you looked through Cybele Pascal’s cooking books for ideas for bread and butter?

Just stumbled upon your site, and so glad I did. I have been visiting an allergist and trying to figure out what im allergic to. My face, neck and back have been getting a rash that won’t go away and we cannot figure out what it is. So far, shellfish and nickel, but nothing that can really explain my rash :( I just keep hoping I will figure it out one day. Been to two allergists but they haven’t been able to help much. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • Welcome! Sorry to hear about your unexplainable rash. How frustrating. I’m actually doing a lot of research now on skin/cosmetic products to write a post because I’m having a similar problem. Was thinking something I’m putting on my skin is causing me to react. Honestly, allergists haven’t helped me either, nor the dermatologist. Do you think you might be gluten intolerant?
